The chokes (ballasts) regulate the voltage supplied to the selected lamp, to the operating voltage for it and ignite the lamp, creating a high-voltage pulse after the interruption of the current from the starter. They are divided into two types - electromagnetic and electronic ballast. The difference between the two is that the electronic ballast does not require a starter and is usually lighter and heats up less. Other benefits are quieter operation than a conventional ballast, an increase in lamp life by 30% - 50% and reduced light flux pulsations.

​Electronic ballasts change the flow of current in the light bulb using a series of induction coils that are separated from each other. Unlike the magnetic ballast, they use one induction coil, not a series of coils. The pulse sent from the ballast to the lamp is faster, which reduces energy consumption. Electronic chokes do not heat up during operation.

Magnetic chokes are compact and cost-effective devices that are suitable for "lighting" lamps from 250W to 1000W. It is recommended that chokes be kept outside of smaller grow rooms, as they convert some of the electricity they absorb into heat and can thus contribute to an increase in temperature.
