Why grow pineapple?
Pineapple is valued not only for its exotic appearance, but also for the enzyme bromelain . It has a number of beneficial properties - it aids digestion, reduces inflammation and strengthens the immune system. Although it is a tropical plant, growing it in Bulgaria is completely possible, as long as you provide it with enough light, warmth and proper care.
Step 1: Choosing the right fruit
Success starts in the store. Choose healthy, ripe fruit with the following characteristics:
- • Bright green leaves: No brown or dried tips.
- • Firm crust: With a slight golden hue.
- • Pleasant sweet aroma: Which indicates that the fruit is ripe.
Avoid pineapples that have rotted or dried leaves, as the chances of successful rooting will be lower.
Step 2: Crown preparation in 4 steps
- Cutting: Cut off the top of the pineapple, leaving the crown with the leaves and about 2-3 cm of the fruit part.
- Cleaning: Carefully remove all the pulp (the soft part of the fruit) – it is a major source of rot.
- Revealing the buds: Peel back a few of the bottom leaves until you see the small brown root buds at the base of the stem.
- Drying: Allow the crown to dry for 1-2 days at room temperature to heal the "wounds" before planting.
Step 3: Planting and substrate
Choose a pot with good drainage holes. Use a well-draining soil – a mix for succulents or cacti combined with sand and perlite (2:1:1 ratio) is ideal. You can check out our specialist substrates for best results. Place the crown in the soil, without covering the leaves, and water gently.
Optimal growth conditions
- ☀️ Light: At least 6-8 hours a day. If you don't have enough sun, use LED plant lights .
- 🌡️ Temperature: Optimal between 20°C and 30°C. Keep away from cold drafts in winter.
- 💧 Watering: Water infrequently and deeply, only when the soil is completely dry. Mist the leaves for additional moisture.
Development and signs of success
The first signs of growth appear after 4-6 weeks . Don't worry if the old leaves start to dry out - the important thing is that new, fresh green leaves appear in the center. In spring and summer, feed once a month with quality fertilizers and supplements .
How to stimulate flowering?
Pineapple can bear fruit after 2-3 years. To stimulate it, place a ripe apple next to it and cover it with a transparent bag for 2 weeks - the ethylene from the apple provokes flowering. After the appearance of the flower, it takes another 5-6 months for the fruit to fully ripen.
Possible problems and solutions
| The leaves turn yellow: | Overwatering or poor drainage. Reduce watering frequency immediately. |
| Leaves dry out/brown tips: | Low humidity or too much direct sun. Mist the leaves regularly. |
| Slow growth: | Lack of nutrients or insufficient light. Add fertilizer. |
